Greenwood Surgery have a Patient Participation Group ( PPG ) that meet regularly (once a month when possible).
PPG Meeting - Monday, 20 February 2012 - " To Agree a Survey "
At this meeting the PPG were shown two surveys, of which they had to decide the best one for our surgery. Dr Cormack had given the group a humorous survey and the other was more concerned with how the surgery was working, appointment times, reception issues and information about the PPG.
All the member of the PPG present fel that the humorous survey was pleasant to read but did not accurately reflect what was needed in a survey. Hence they chose the survey which asked questions about Greenwood Surgery's services.
Patients will be asked to complete the survey whilst in the surgery. It will also put on the website and sent out by email to the patients for whom we have email addresses. We will ask them to complete it (if they were willing.)
This survey is to be commenced on the 27 February 2012. The next schedule meeting to iscuss the results was agreed to be held on Monday 26 March 2012.
To see the results of the survey please go to "Latest News & Views" on this website.
This meeting was called to discuss Greenwood Survey results 2012, which was completed and published on the website on 19 March 2012. The website address is: www.greenwoodsurgery.co.uk – see “Latest News & Views”.
The chairperson introduced R Spence to advise the group about the survey and what outcomes he had noted. He responded as follows:
The results demonstrated that the patients feel we are working well and providing a first rate service despite the constraints under which we work - the greatest percentage of marks were in the ‘excellent’ category. The greatest number of ticks for ‘number of times the surgery was visited during the course of a year’ was in the ‘3 – 5 times a year’ box. Patients in the age range 55 – 64yrs visited the practice most frequently.
R Spence then advised the group about the points that had been raised; these were about the morning unbooked sessions, the late evening session (i.e. the commuter surgery) and Healthcare Assistants (HCAs). One patient wanted the unbooked sessions to run daily, one patient wanted a late night surgery and several patients were not certain what a HCA was or did.
These points were discussed by those present at the meeting. It was felt that as the surgery already has an unbooked session every weekday morning, Monday to Friday, it didn’t need to change - but did need to make sure it was advertised fully so that all patients were aware of this service. The surgery also has a late night session (on Tuesday’s until 20.30hrs) and again the group felt that this wasn’t sufficiently well advertised – not all patients were aware of its existence. The plan is to make sure opening/surgery times are in the practice leaflet, on the front door of the surgery, on the surgery website ... and they will be placed in the newsletter once this is completed. Dr J Cormack will also be asked if he can include this information within his weekly magazine column providing the editor doesn’t object.
The group then asked J Nightingale to explain the HCA role within the surgery setting. They were advised that we have this service every day of the week, J Barker, HCA, runs the phlebotomy sessions and can also complete new patient health checks, smoking cessation, and ECGs. She assists with the antenatal patients and contacts the elderly housebound patients regularly, as well as giving Influenza and Pneumococcal immunisations. S Bright, HCA, completes follow up spirometry, is a smoking cessation advisor, completes CVD checks with the nurse, undertakes wound care, ECGs, removes sutures, completes brief intervention alcohol screening, gives vitamin B12 injections, Influenza & Pneumococcal immunisations and does ‘new patient health checks’. She also assists Dr Cormack during the minor surgery sessions and works with J Nightingale in undertaking audits and providing QoF information.
As most of the group were unaware of these staff members, it was felt that we should advertise the service more in the surgery, on the website and ask Dr J Cormack if he could add information about the HCA’s in his weekly magazine column.
Having discussed other outstanding matters, the meeting concluded by agreeing the above actions and will discuss any of these points again, if there are further enquiries, at the next meeting on 23 April 2012.
The next meeting is scheduled for 7pm on Monday 23 April 2012 at the surgery.
